La Langue Jèrriaise

La Langue Jèrriaise - Autumn 2015

This autumn, we shall celebrate our twentieth year as a Section, having started in October 1995, and in the autumn months we will continue to meet to improve our knowledge of Jèrriais through reading, translating and conversation.  We shall also continue to study and catalogue scripts left to us by authors and competitors in various early Eisteddfods. These are very valuable historical records, not only for the use of Jèrriais, but because they also give us texts to read and translate, and phrases to learn for conversation. In addition, they are sources of information about different, almost forgotten aspects of Jersey life, which are often described with much humour.

Geraint Jennings has also written an amusing short story centred around La Hougue Bie and the legend of the dragon. The story has a variety of sentence constructions, various tenses, verb forms and common vocabulary for us to translate into Jèrriais in order to improve our use of the language.  In addition, he has compiled a list of verbs with unusual forms in the different tenses for us to use in composition and for reference.  For those who want to practice speaking Jèrriais, colleagues in L’Office du Jèrriais have arranged a coffee morning and an evening sun-downer session where we can meet and chat at all levels, so don’t be scared... details can be obtained from the SJ Office.

During the autumn, we shall practice another piece for competition in the Eisteddfod, and again, as in previous years, to improve our ability, we will mix games and the writing of stories under titles provided by L’Office du Jèrriais. In addition, we shall be studying and selecting a series of views of Jersey scenery with short pieces of Jèrriais prose and poetry translated on the back, to produce as postcards to celebrate our twentieth year. These will be left at various outlets to publicise our native language. We shall also be attending La Faîs’sie d’Cidre, La Sethée du Nièr Beurre, La Fêted’Noué and Lé Sèrvice Annuel de Neuf Leçons et Cantiques at L’Églyise de St André.

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month in the Arthur Mourant Room at 8pm at the Société Jersiaise office, Pier Road, and further information and contact details can be obtained from the office.
