New in the Library : Islands of the Mind

Islands of the Mind : how the human imagination created the Atlantic world (Palgrave, 2004). John R. Gillis explores the human fascination with islands, from their role in ancient Greek epics to their importance as places of retreat for early Chrisitains and artists; as places of scientific exploration and political exile; from the myth of Atlantis to the modern tourism industry. Although Jersey is not specifically mentioned, this book is a thought-provoking read for anyone who lives on an island.
